The lawyer Gianpaolo Zini is interrogated at criminal police headquarters: as Parmalat’s long-standing financial advisor, he is the man who devised the means used to cover up what would be described as a ‘financial abyss’. According to the magistrates in Milan, the company’s exposure is in the order of 13 billion Euros. The sum embezzled by Parmalat’s boss Calisto Tanzi alone amounts to 800 million Euros. The outlines of one of the biggest
bankruptcy cases in Italian history thus begin to take shape.

Offices of Farmindustria, the Italian association of pharmaceutical companies: Draft Bill 5442, ‘Provisions for the protection of animals utilized for scientific or technological purposes’, is greeted with enthusiasm. In fact, it is a law that focuses on ‘regulating’ vivisection, among other things inserting elements that make it worse than the previous Bill 116/92 and thus missing the opportunity to declare the need for a serious reassessment of research programmes that make use of animals, and introducing the principle of generalized tacit consent for the authorization of such experiments.

For 15 years, various police forces will carry out investigations to no avail. Spies, informers and traitors, statesmen and ambiguous antifascists, Fascist extremists and corrupt party leaders are all caught up in the inquiries. The affair will remain shrouded in mystery.
